Description
What are we asking of our horses and, are they able to achieve it?
This webinar is approved CPD for accredited BHS Coaches
In this conversation Liz Eaton FBHS will be talking with Dr Fiona Bloom Phd Msc BSc CSP ACPAT Cat A. Fiona is an experienced horsewoman, Team GB International competitor and FEI Permitted Therapist. She is also Chef d’Equipe for the Team GB Endurance Team, alongside her very busy veterinary and human physiotherapy practice.
How does what we do to the outside of a horse affect what happens on the inside? Fiona will share her intimate knowledge of equine and human biomechanics and, her extensive experience in treating humans and at every level. What is going on inside the horse’s body when we ask for engagement and self-carriage? Do we expect the impossible then resort to artificial aids or force, before the horse has a chance to gain the necessary strength and understanding required to achieve it? What happens when horses change discipline, or even just riders or routine? How long does it take for well-developed muscles in one area to soften off, and for others to become strong enough to support a new discipline that is asked of the horse? We all know just how obliging horses are – they want to please us but, when they do not have the solid foundations needed to work as we would like, compensations occur and eventually it all falls apart. Be this from too much too soon on an anatomically immature body, a change of career perhaps from racing to riding horse or, from hunting to show jumper or dressage horse.
This conversation will touch on all our previous webinars; whether the horse is battling mixed messages from its rider, a poorly fitted saddle or bridle, or poor hoof conformation or farriery.

Fiona started riding at the age of 5 and, by the time she was 13 she was an international competitor representing Great Britain.
Through competitive riding, she learned to care for her horse, maintaining fitness and ensuring welfare, which formed the basis for her career as a physiotherapist.
As a category A member of ACPAT, Fiona received her degree as a human physiotherapist from the University of Hertfordshire in 2007, going on to attend the Royal Veterinary College where she gained her master’s degree in veterinary physiotherapy in 2011. In 2023 she became Dr Fiona Bloom on receiving her doctorate from the University of West England (Bristol).
As a veterinary physiotherapist, Fiona’s work has taken her up and down Britain, across Europe and, as an equine physiotherapist, to the UAE, to assess and treat race and endurance horses for international owners.
Fiona believes in passing on her knowledge and lectures both in the UK and internationally, either online or in person. She welcomes opportunities to teach those who are keen to learn and has had the pleasure of speaking for organisations such as Hartpury University, PKW Events, Online Pet Health, VetPD and the College of Animal Welfare, to name a few.
